When to go Digital
The digital interface is best utilized for independent practice where immediate feedback is necessary. If a student is working alone, the digital platform prevents them from practicing a misspelled word for 15 minutes, as it will instantly reject a wrong answer. It is also the best choice for the "Daily Challenge" to build habit streaks.
When to go Printable
Printables are superior when you need to control focus and eliminate distractions. A piece of paper only has one tab open. Printables are also essential for fine motor skill development in younger learners, and they provide a physical artifact for formative assessment data.
The Hybrid Approach
The most effective classrooms use both. A teacher might use the digital Classroom View on the smartboard to introduce the concept and do 3 puzzles together. Then, the teacher hands out a printable worksheet for students to apply the skill independently at their desks.
